Hey, Book Friends. I finished reading “Anna K” by Jenny Lee, and wow, I am blown away by this book. “Anna K” is definitely one of my favorite reads for 2020.
The characters, the families, the highs (and the lows) just blew my mind. I am sad the book is over, yet I feel a sense of gratitude for reading this; I’m not sure why, but I do.
“Anna K: A Love Story” is a modern retelling of “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy, but with a YA twist against a New York City backdrop. Lee did a fantastic job sticking to the original plan but infusing modern life into the story.
“Anna K” is a complicated, twisty love story that ends with some characters having great endings and others tragic. I’m at a loss for words on how much I enjoyed this book. I can’t imagine the heartache and heartbreaks that these characters faced, but that’s life. Some stories are just so unimaginable, yet still accurate.
There were many nuances about this story that I appreciated, but the diversity of the characters tops the list. Let me be clear; this is how you do diversity correctly! POC are not trinkets to sprinkle in stories, but compelling characters that offer vibrant, in-depth stories for the telling.
“Anna K” is a perfect read from start to finish. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 stars).
Love, loss, death, dogs, revenge-porn, and so much more. Kind of hard to believe it’s all about teens lol. Must read.
P.S. If you loved “To All The Boys I Loved Before” and “Gossip Girl” you will love this book.
