The Summer I Turned Pretty

Before the hit that was “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” series, author Jenny Han wrote, “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” It’s the first book of the Summer Series. The book was very “Summer Lovin happened so fast.”

Synopsis: Belly and her brother Steven are heading to the summer beach house with their mom, Laurel. The house belongs to Laurel’s best friend, Susannah, who spends the summer there, along with her sons Conrad and Jeremiah. The four kids have grown up together, but Belly’s feelings are maturing. She views Jeremiah as a brother, but Conrad is unique. This summer, each family is going through transitional phases, and the vibe is different. Belly tries to deny her true feelings, but first loves do not disappear as easy as she would hope.

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” was a cute book, a great #Covid, and a political distraction. The writing wasn’t as detailed as #TATBILB, but this was written prior. The author’s writing and skills in plot development got better with time.

A theme that I kept thinking about was summer growth and how everyone, young women, in particular, can think back to the one summer when we all blossomed. That one summer, when we were in love.

I enjoyed this book, but there are undoubtedly other YA romance books that are more enjoyable. The first half of the book was slow, and I almost stopped reading. Though I am glad I read this book, I don’t think I’ll finish the series.
